HP Goes to the Dark Side

HP’s Board Chairwoman Pat Dunn has talked a blue circle the last week, but she is not fooling anyone with the “I didn’t know” routine.

The back story is that Ms. Dunn started an internal investigation into leaks by the Board of Directors of HP. She hired a company to do the investigation, who in turn hired other people to do the down and dirty snooping. What these people did is being called “pretexting”, which is someone’s new name for the old name “social engineering”. Both terms, new and old mean pretending to be someone else to get personal information or access to someplace that you can get the information. Pretexting is used mostly in talking about phone or cell information, but it’s the same thing. Now, it’s not illegal in all states, but it is in California where HP is located. So, this is where the we get sticky.

Ms. Dunn can say she didn’t know, she just wanted to bring a halt to the leaks or that she “works at the pleasure of the board”, but she is just like most high level executives. She won’t take the blame. How can you not know that someone is doing something illegal when you get the type information she was receiving. She didn’t ask “Are we following the law in getting this?” I guess not…..

What they’ve done at HP is turn to the dark side. They’ve joined all the hackers that the government has prosecuted and put in jail. What they have done is what Kevin Mitnick did so well, impersonate someone to get information.

Ms. Dunn, resign, don’t wait for the board to ask you. It’s the right thing to do.

That’s what I think….What about you?
